We had a highly enjoyable morning with all of the happy, friendly animals at the Rainforest Habitat in Port Douglas (including Bobo the Magpie Goose who stood in my plate and tried to eat Scott’s toes, the napkins, the salt & pepper shakers, etc. . .).
It should be noted that many of the animals here love to have their pictures taken and have set poses and prefered angles. Here are some highlights:

Bush Stone Curlew

Southern Cassowary

Isn’t the Bush Stone Curlew the most MISERABLE looking creature you have ever seen! There is an Aboriginal myth that a man whose wife and lover brought about the death of his son. The two men fought and the father Purukupali drowned himself with the body of his dead son. The lover became the moon man with the wounds visible on his face, and the wife Japara became the Curlew and roams the forest at night wailing with remorse and sorrow over the loss of her son and the calamity she brought to the world. I really liked the curlew. It seemed like it was lost in thought and was completely oblivious to the world around. Seemed quite contemplative and peaceful to me.
