So I’ve given it plenty of time to sink in, and feel I can finally bring you our match report from the football on Tuesday. I’ll keep it brief and to the point, like a correspondent with just a short space to get across their feelings. I know it’s Friday and you’ll want to be getting on with your day, leading ever closer to the weekend.
I guess first I have to tell you the most amazing thing … it turns out David Beckham is much more careful than you’d imagine. So careful in fact that he leaves his halo in the dressing room when he plays. He’s so considerate of the other players in fact, that he works really hard to dull the golden sheen.
Still, he does play very well, and it really is very cool to be able to say that we saw him bend it like … well … like Beckham. However, there’s only so much one man can do. Galaxy are not a good team. Maybe in time he and new head coach Ruud Gullit can bring them up to speed, but until then they’re a little rough around the edges. And to be honest, I don’t want to speak ill of the local team (though we both fell with ease behind the visitors), but Sydney aren’t all that hot either. It doesn’t really compare when you’ve been spoilt by a lifetime of European football.
But don’t get me wrong, I still had a great time at my first ever football match. It was an exciting game and a frustrating game, as all good matches are. The crowd was lively and raucous and as uncouth as you’d expect from a football crowd. There was beer on tap, there were goals on tap (Sydney took it 5-3) and it was just great. A very memorable experience.
Live sport is always enjoyable, but it wasn’t quite enough to convert me – don’t worry Neil, I’m still a rugby man
