We’ve had a couple of very busy weekends in the past few weeks, enjoying the many delights that Sydney has to offer. This weekend we thought we’d take it easy – not least because the trains are out, for just the first weekend of 6 in the coming months.
Saturday was a relaxing hanging out day. For lunch Amanda made some incredible steak quesadillas with her new-and-believe-it-or-not-improved fresh salsa that hit the perfect chillin’ spot. For dinner I (that’s right … I as in me … I do help out in the kitchen sometimes you know) prepared coriander crusted lamb with spiced orange-hoisin sauce – a recipe from one of Amanda’s favourite food bloggers Chubby Hubby. And, even if I do blow my own trumpet, it was damn good.
Today, Sunday, was shopping day – a day to leisurely wander through Crows Nest, acquiring the various bargains that come our way. Midway through our journey we decided that eating was in order. We remembered that just beyond our regular circuit was an authentic Japanese noodle place, Ryo’s. It’s small, much of the menu is in Japanese, most of the customers are Japanese (always a good sign for authentic eatings) and the food was bloody fantastic. We don’t have any photos but luckily one of our other favourite food bloggers Helen does – this place is so good she went twice in a month, and it’s a big deal for those on the South to come North to eat! Let’s just say the best ramen in Sydney makes Ryo’s a fantastic addition to our “places to take visitors list”!!
We started with some fried gyoza -that’s dumplings to you. There are plenty off mains to choose from (don’t be scared, there are English translations of most dishes) but we both plumped for the noodles. Ramen dishes are generally a combination of the noodles (obviously) along side some meat and vegetables served in broth. Amanda had hers in hot pork soup, which along with some very tender pork came with a soy sauce boiled egg – a surprisingly tasty addition to a boiled-ovum hater such as myself. My ramen came in a simply fantastically wonderful sour chicken soup, and shared bowl space with minced prawn balls and slices of pink swirled fish cake. For a well priced lunch we left very satisfied indeed.
Once our epic shopping adventure was complete we returned home where Amanda made some very refreshing strawberry daiquiris. Weekends rule!!
